Steel structures from TMETAL for the construction of the Lyon-Turin tunnel

Steel Structures, Production selection

France

TMETAL supplies steel structures for the transport of excavated material, which will be used in the construction of a tunnel on the new Lyon-Turin railway corridor. Our delivery includes a total of four towers including engineering, production, surface protection and packaging. The photos show one of the towers during pre-assembly inspection “in black” weighing approximately 40 tons and packaging after hot-dip galvanizing, ready for shipment.

The “Euralpin Lyon Turin Tunnel”, also known as TELT, is a challenging project connecting Lyon, France, with Turin, Italy. It will include the Mont Cenis foot tunnel, which, when completed, will surpass the Gotthard Tunnel with a length of 57,5 km. The Gotthard Tunnel is currently the longest railway tunnel in the world, measuring 57,1 km. The aim of the project is to significantly speed up and streamline travel between France and Italy, while relieving road traffic. The effect should be felt by both passengers and freight.

The construction is demanding due to the mountainous Alpine terrain, with 180 companies and 1400 workers expected to be involved. According to newcivilengineer.com, the main through tunnels will be excavated using two bi-mode tunnel boring machines (TBMs), capable of breaking through hard rock. A total of 2,3 million cubic meters of material is expected to be excavated during the excavation, with up to 3% being reused on the project.

The TELT project is managed by a group of the same name with equal representation from France and Italy. It is also the first project to deploy transnational anti-mafia legislation and plans to carry out over 2100 anti-mafia audits.

TMETAL is proud to contribute to this important project, which will make transportation and travel across Europe easier.
